Each spring, several graduate and undergraduate scholarships are awarded to honor
Dr. Elton Abernathy, who was the founding chair of the Department of Speech Communication and Theatre. Dr. Elton Abernathy came to Southwest Texas as a debate coach and speech and drama department chair in 1946. During his 27 years as department chair, and a total of 33 years on the faculty, Dr. A (as he was called by family, friends and students) saw his department grow, making a 20-year dream shared by Abernathy and SWT’s director of theatre, James Barton come true. Dr. Abernathy was one of a selected handful of faculty members at Texas State to be honored with the title of Professor Emeritus. Literally, thousands of students were inspired by his teaching and his dedication during his tenure. In the spirit of his dedication to Texas State we offer to outstanding Communication Studies students these annual scholarships that bear his name
The Comm Club Scholarship is a $250 scholarship awarded each year to a deserving Communication Studies
student enrolled at Texas State. The 2009 Scholarship was awarded to Communications Studies undergraduate
student: Ada Pomar. The Comm Club is open to all Communication Studies majors or anyone taking Communication Studies courses.
