Comm Studies Student Internship Program Information
NOTE: Deadline for submitting your internship application for Fall 2013 is 5pm - May 9, 2013.

The Communication Internship Program is available to a select group of Comm Studies majors or minors.
Here are some frequently asked questions about the Comm Studies Internship Program.

What are the prerequisites for an internship?

  • Communication Studies major or minor
  • Junior or Senior status
  • Completed (or enrolled) in 18 hours of Communication Studies courses
  • GPA of 3.0 overall preferred
  • Completion of Organizational Communication or Leadership with a grade of A or B
  • Permission of the instructor to register

What are learning outcomes for an internship?

Apply communication theory and research, learned in the classroom to a professional environment
Analyze organizations and interactions from a communication perspective
Increase your understanding of an organization and the factors influencing
organizational behavior Identification of learninng objectives
that facilitate the acquisition of new knowledge, career growth, skills and the ability to work with others

What are the requirements during your internship?

Whether you are seeking an internship iwth the federal government or in the corporate sector, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) provides you the opportunity to graduate with career experience. Best of al, you gain this experience while living in the nation's capital or cities like Atlanta, Albuquerque, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle, St. Louis, New York City, or other locations nationwide.

Eligibility:
Interns spend ten or fiftenenn weeks at their assigned internships. To qualify, you must:

BUCKLE SALES MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
As a Buckle intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience in many facets of our business—from
sales and store merchandising to hiring and store operations. Working closely with an
experienced Store Manager, you’ll develop an understanding of how Buckle’s retail business
works and what it takes to excel.

Organized to mirror the first few months of our year-long Management Development
Program, the Internship Program is set up to allow students the opportunity to further
explore additional s
ales and management positions upon fulfillment of their internship

Internship details
Three- to four-month paid position
• Position may be full-time (35-40 hours/week) or part-time (15-30 hours/week)

Monthly focus
Interns will provide weekly reports to their Area and District Managers, updating them on

PROJECT VOTE SMART - LEGISLATIVE RESEARCH INTERN
3-26-13

Project Vote Smart, a national non-profit and non-partisan political research and voter education organization, is currently accepting applications for its Spring 2013 and Summer 2013 internship programs located in Austin, Texas. The organization, founded by a politically diverse group of leaders including former presidents Carter and Ford, provides information to the public regarding all aspects of political candidates and elected government officials. By making this information freely available, Project Vote Smart aims to better prepare citizens to defend themselves from the political hype and misrepresentations that are characteristic of modern-day political campaigns.

Interns in our Austin office, located at the University of Texas at Austin’s Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life, will work primarily on our legislative research program, covering legislation and key votes from all fifty states and Congress. Daily tasks may include tracking local media sources and reports, compiling legislative voting records, summarizing and translating significant pieces of legislation into language the average voter can understand, and other duties as needed. All interns perform substantive and meaningful work, and will never be asked to answer phones or make coffee.

Interns gain familiarity reading and interpreting actual legislation, and acquire valuable experience for those considering law school or working in any policy-related field. Through their daily work, interns in our legislative research department are exposed to the important issues facing their state and the country, as well as the solutions being proposed by policymakers. We are more than happy to work with students' university departments in order to help them receive academic credit for their internship experience when possible.

Required Qualifications:
• Excellent written communication skills
• Strong desire to learn more about politics, policy, and the legislative process
• Enthusiasm for Project Vote Smart’s mission
• Ability to remain nonpartisan
• Ability to commit to at least 10 hours per week for the entire semester

Preferred Qualifications:
• Research experience
• Prior knowledge of the legislative process

NUTRITION EDUCATION INTERN

Internship Description:
The CAFB Nutrition Education Intern supports the CHOICES Nutrition Education Program in their effort to provide nutrition education to the community.  This person will gain valuable experience in community nutrition and work with Registered Dietitian and Nutritionists. 

Primary Internship Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an assistant for CHOICES Program Nutrition Education classes (children, adults and/or senior classes). 
  • Contact CAFB Partner Agencies to provide them information on the CHOICES Program via phone and email.
  • Help market the CHOICES Program by sending brochures and/or marketing materials to Partner Agencies.
  • Assist Registered Dietitian with Kids Cafe menu analysis using Food Processor software.    
  • Assist Registered Dietitian in analyzing the nutrition content of CAFB inventory.
  • Assist dietitian and nutritionists with preparing for classes. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Nutrition Education Manager. 

Internship Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student considering a career in nutrition, community nutrition and/or dietetics. 
  • Must have a general interest in nutrition, science, food, cooking, etc. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a diverse range of people.

COMMUNITY EVENTS INTERN 

Internship Description:
The CAFB Community Events Intern will be integral in helping to maintain community partnerships through administrative and project management support. 

Primary Internship Responsibilities:

  • Manage inventory of event equipment, conduct periodic inventory of equipment and recommend replacement of equipment as required.
  • Provide information on events and contacts to the Development database manager.
  • Assist the Community Events Manager & Coordinator with acknowledgments and recognition for Community Event partners and sponsors.
  • Assist the Community Events Manager & Coordinator by meeting, training and working with event volunteers.
  • Assist the Community Events Manager & Coordinator by working closely with the marketing team to coordinate logistical needs.
  • Attend events and assist the Community Events Manager and Coordinator as needed.
  • Assist with creation of an annual calendar of Community Event Volunteer needs, including an outline of all volunteer roles and timeline for recruitment. 
  • Community Event Sponsorship Tracking (Reggae Fest/Hot Sauce); CAFB raffle sponsorship tracking (for priority raffle events):
    • outline previous CAFB sponsors and update contacts as necessary
    • send requests for raffle donations via mail
    • send email follow-ups for raffle donation requests via convio
    • track points of contact and keeping records of donations, as secured
    • send donor acknowledgements for raffle items

Internship Qualifications:

The CAFB Community Events Department is looking to appoint an intern with some knowledge of marketing concepts, an interest in project management, and a desire to work in a fast paced agency environment. VOLUNTEER RESOURCES INTERN 

Internship Description:
The Volunteer Resources Intern will support the Community Relation Team with their FY11-12 goal of strengthening technology and information management in support of volunteer engagement. The CAFB Volunteer Resources Intern will be integral in helping to research and identify options for CAFB transition to a paperless and streamlined volunteer scheduling, check-in and tracking process. 

Primary Internship Responsibilities:

  • Research a minimum of five food banks that have the same or similar weekly volunteer capacity.
  • Once researched, choose the top three food banks to contact and discuss their volunteer programming including processes for scheduling and documentation of volunteer hours. 
  • Contact a minimum of two Food Banks that currently use technology for volunteer scheduling, check-in and hour documentation. 
  • Research a minimum of two options for on-line systems that allow volunteers to check in on site.
  • Research two food banks that have the same or similar capacity for Community Service Restitution volunteers. Determine how these hours are documented and verified for their community service program.
  • Support the CR team with other volunteer registration and tracking duties as needed to provide context to the project.

Internship Qualifications:

  • Ability to work cooperatively with a diverse range of people.
  • Must be motivated, organized, detail-oriented and capable of working in a fast-paced environment and multi-tasking.
  • Ideal candidates will be professional, outgoing and proficient with Microsoft Office products and internet research.

COMMUNICATIONS INTERN

Internship Description:
The Communications Intern is responsible for finding and creating the stories of the Food Bank. They will use different mediums and social media to tell the CAFB story and the impact of our work alleviating hunger in Central Texas. They will write and solicit content for our blog, newsletters and other online properties. They will create videos and podcasts, working much as a journalist would, seeking out stories from our various stakeholders including but not limited to clients, volunteers, advocates and partners. They will also preferably be bilingual. The Communications Intern is also responsible for helping the Food Bank achieve its mission by uniquely positioning it as a leader in the community, and must be able to exercise discretion and independent judgment in their work. 

Primary Internship Responsibilities:

  • Create content for CAFB blog.
  • Plan, create and distribute CAFB videos as needed.
  • Maintain CAFB storybank and story archives for easy use by other CAFB staff.
  • Conduct interviews with clients, supporters, volunteers, advocates, partners and other constituents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Online Marketing Director.

Internship Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Journalism, Marketing or related field.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Proven experience with social media tools including blogs, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.
  • Exceptional grammar, spelling and punctuation. Command of Associated Press style.
  • Proven creative writing skills.
  • Proficiency with computer applications including Adobe Premiere, Wordpress and Microsoft Office Suite. Advanced Microsoft training and experience a plus.

EVENT PLANNING INTERNSHIP - SWOOP EVENTS
SWOOP Events, a full service event planning company in Austin, is seeking a qualified event planning intern. The ideal candidate will assist in the planning and execution of events, including weddings, rehearsal dinners, private parties and corporate events. The Winfield Inn Bed and Breakfast is located in Kyle, Texas. We currently host weekend weddings and special events, but are in the process of expanding our property and will soon be hosting weekday corporate and social events as well.

Video Production Interns will gain experience in all aspects of production from planning a shoot to editing with Final Cut Pro and After Effects. Front Steps, based on the belief that all people deserve the dignity of a safe place to call home, provides a pathway home through shelter, affordable housing, and community education. Front Steps is a private nonprofit organization with a budget over $3,000,000. Front Steps manages the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH), which is a day resource center and overnight shelter. Through shelter and permanent-housing programs, skills development, employment resources, and more, Front Steps helps low-income workers, disabled and homeless individuals, and their families to find lasting and affordable housing.

General Responsibilities
Front Steps is seeking an English, Communication, Journalism, Marketing, or Public Relations major who is interested in an unpaid internship for the Fall 2010 semester. The intern will be responsible for compiling and editing the Front Steps’ newsletter, writing press releases, and helping with other communication-related projects as assigned. The intern will gain great professional experience for his or her resume while providing valuable service to further the mission of Front Steps. 

Job Description
1.    Assist with writing press releases about Front Steps’ activities and accomplishments for various media outlets, including local, state, and national publications.
2.    Author articles for the Front Steps’ e-newsletter and client success stories for use in various publications.
3.    Assist with refreshing and editing web site content as needed.
4.    Assist with writing acknowledgment letters and updating the volunteer/benefactor database.
5.    Assist with the implementation of Front Steps’ social media strategy.

The Marketing Intern Program of San Antonio Magazine is designed to give an overview of the operations of a monthly magazine (circulation: ca. 40,000), with an emphasis on marketing and circulation work as well as the business side of running a city magazine.  It is a flexible program that can be adapted to a variety of time formats (from a few hours per week to full-time, with flexible hours during the day) depending on the needs of the intern.

Job Description:
The marketing intern program provides work in all areas related to marketing a monthly, paid circulation magazine.  One channel of activities provides project management (or case study) exposure.  The basic skills learned in this program are applicable to business in general and marketing in particular.

Responsibilities include:
•    Assist with development and distribution of San Antonio Magazine publications and outreach materials.
•    Make sales phone calls.
•    Accept assignments designed to introduce the fundamentals of marketing.
