The COMM Lab

The Communication Lab is located on the 3rd Floor of Centennial Hall, Room 306 and is available to students enrolled in any Communication Studies course. The lab personnel includes one full-time faculty member and four graduate students who work one-on-one with students in various communication scenarios.

The COMM Lab's purpose is to help students improve their oral communication and develop their skills, giving them an opportunity to practice the communication techniques they learned in classes through recorded experiential activities (filmed performances). In the lab, students view themselves and engage in self-critique along with a staff member, who assesses and constructively critiques their skills. The lab staff also offers personalized instruction to students experiencing communication apprehension or "stage fright".

What to do at the COMM Lab:

  • Rehearse and record your performance
  • Review the performance and get a critique from a staff member
  • Practice interpersonal and small group communication
  • Practice listening exercises and responses
  • Practice giving and receiving feedback
  • Practice expressing feelings and using descriptive language
  • Learn the use of criticism, conflict and negotiation
  • Learn to recognize nonverbal behavior
  • Learn to manage self-disclosure
  • Practice ethical communication and language
  • Increase your awareness of and sensitivity to all forms of diversity
