Our faculty members conduct studies to advance knowledge and practice in six broad areas: health communication, interpersonal communication, instructional communication, organizational communication, rhetoric and persuasion, and training and development. We engage in research partnerships with students and community members to embrace and pursue bold, interdisciplinary solutions to common communication challenges. Findings from our work are published in national and international peer-reviewed journals and books, and many of our faculty members are cited as communication research experts in media outlets worldwide. Almost half of our faculty members have received grants and other extramural funding for their work, and our department is home to four recipients of the most prestigious university-level research award at Texas State. The Department of Communication Studies is research-focused and driven.
Communication Studies students also participate in our culture of research excellence. Graduate students have the opportunity to learn through mentored research opportunities, and undergraduate students learn how to conduct research in today’s marketplace. The goal is not just to learn about research, but rather to apply theory and method to do research that advances praxis through student and community engagement.
